How to rename a WordPress Theme

Tue, Dec 30, 2008

WordPress, WordPress MU

If you work with customizing WordPress Themes, you most likely make multiple copies of each theme you work on; for safe keeping.  And that is a very sensible thing to do.

On the other hand, you might end up with 2, 3, 4 or more copies of the same theme in your WordPress Dashboard Manage Themes screen, and no way to determine which is which.

If you rename the themes you modify, you will be able to tell them apart from the original unmodified version, in the Manage Themes screen, without needing to apply or open each one up.

Here’s how:

Under “Appeaance” click “Editor”.  If you don’t see “Editor” click on the dropdown arrow to the right of the word “Appearance”.

Find ”Stylesheet (style.css)” in the right hand column.  Click on the Stylesheet to open it in the editor window.

The first line of the Stylesheet is “Theme Name:”.  Type your new revised name on that line.  You could also add some identifying, descriptive notes to the “Description:” line.  When done, click “Update File”.

As soon as the file updates, you will see this error message: “The requested theme does not exist”.  That is OK.  Click your browser’s back button one or twice, until you return to the “Manage Themes” screen.

Your newly renamed theme will appear in alphabetical order.  Click to apply it to your blog.  (Or click on a different theme if you don’t want to apply the renamed theme.)
